It works though to the person who's doing it, so who am I to judge. I've seen this a few times, especially with the older systems. The simplest, and seemingly most effective is to make a thin wood box small enough to slide in an ice wall, or to have something elevating the machine while an Ice wall is underneath the inlet port.

On my stupidity, and other factors, I've tried to figure out how to cool the machine using both internal and external options. I can't help you if you have two fans in your system. If you feel air coming from the left side, your fan's on the left. Flip it to where you see the grate and hover your hand over it. A simple way to do it is to plug your system into a Thunder Display and let the computer run without the lid open.
They make it really hard to find it though. Mine's on the right, so the exhaust port is on the right. If your system has one fan, and you have Macs Fan Control, it'll tell you which side your fan is at. This will help a little in the long run, for it'll allow for air to flow under the casing as well as inside of it. The simplest is to elevate the rear of your system, where the cooling inlet and exhaust ports are. Now, if you don't really like the normal internal temperature, and you need it to keep itself cool, there are some ways. If you wish to reduce the life of your fans by having them run at that speed for an extended amount of time, be my guest. You do not want to run the fans at 6100 RPM for more than twenty minutes, as I painfully found out with an older machine. For moderate jobs that'll take a bit of power, you want to keep the fans running at a constant 4000 RPM or higher to a cap of 5000 RPM, something I found out after experimenting with Macs Fan Control. However, I've seen CPU temps fly past 160 and higher on certain loads.

Usually a Mac will try to keep its temperature at around 100 - 115 Internal Temperature, while the CPU chills a few degrees higher. If you're trying to go for heavier loads, then expect it to throttle. The stock fans can provide adequate cooling for some moderate jobs, but not long term heavy lifting. The GPU, depending on the age of the machine can and will give you problems. (Blender, Unity, and some low maintenance games). I have a 2014-15 Mac Book Pro, which does decent for what I usually do.
Cooling on a Mac is rather difficult to usually control, especially with how it's designed.
